How many of you have seen movies that portray southeast asian characters in a positive way? Alot of the movies that I've seen seems to show the dark, tragic, and grimy side of the people. Movies like Ong Bhat, although popular amoung the younger audience who enjoy the sport of fighting, seems to perpetuate the negative stereotype of the people in that part of the world. Ong Bhat, in case you don't know, is a movie about a martial arts fighter in a slum village of Thailand. The movie probably provoked alot of excitements for younger audience, but the people in the background were disappointing. It probably didn't provoke any sympathy from the international crowd. Another one is a movie with Jean Claude Van Dam and Mel Gibson. The people in the background are often shown as villanous, greedy, immoral, poor soul, and all the negative adjectives you can think of. Consequently, southeast asian people would have a negative public image. Once bigger and wealthier countries sense our defenselessness, it is open to all kinds of attack.
