Sweden, Japan provide aid for Laos Vientiane (VNA) - The Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) has granted 9 million USD to the sustainable environment development project (phase II) in Laos. The second phase will be carried out from now to 2010, helping improve environmental management in Laos. A document to this effect was signed in Vientiane on June 9 between Dr. Bountiem Phitsamay, Minister attached to the Office of the Prime Minister in charge of science-technology and environment, and Swedish Ambassador Ann Lis Aberg. The project on sustainable environment development in Laos (phase I), from 2001 to 2005, improved the role of national and local environment committees, helped their staff from central to local levels build strategic projects and regulations on environmental management and education until 2020. Earlier, a document on Japan's non-refundable aid to Laos's education sector was signed in Vientiane on June 8 by representatives from the Lao Education Ministry and the Japanese International Cooperation Department. The aid aimed to promote effectiveness of the Japan-built international cooperation centre to help Laos's human resources development.--Enditem Source: VNA
