800,000 foreign tourists expected in 2005LAOS expects to receive 801,821 foreign tourists and USD 114,323,412 from the tourism sector in 2005, said a press release from the National Tourism Authority (NTA). NTAfs Council for Market and Tourism Promotion added that its target for 2006 is 855,814 foreign visitors and tourist dollars totalling USD 123,047,110. In order to reach the targets, the NTA is looking into closer collaboration with state organisations and the private sector, in the areas of funding, human resource development and experience sharing. NTA is also keen to work with foreign embassies in Laos, Laosf embassy overseas and to establish tourism promotion offices in target markets. The press release added that at present, Laos does not rank high on the tourist map because many people do not have access to information on the country. This is due in part to the lack of publicity. However, NTA is positive that the scene would change dramatically in the next couple of years, with Laos hosting many big events such as the ASEAN Summit last November and the upcoming ASEAN Ministerial Meeting in July. These regional events are platforms to introduce Laos to the world. NTA said that its current challenges are aplenty, including getting funding for printing publicity brochures, getting target markets to fly direct to Laos, and developing tourism infrastructure and facilities.
