The Japan International Cooperation Centre (JICE) and the Ministry of Education signed a contract for the 7 th project for Human Resource Development Scholarships Wednesday in Vientiane .
The signing ceremony was held in Vientiane between the Director General of Planning and Cooperation, Lytou Bouapao and the Department of International Exchanges of JICE Managing Director, Toshimishi Aoki.
Mr Lytou said that Laos still lacked qualified staff, managers, scientists and researchers to meet its socio-economic development needs.
Human resource development (HRD) is one of the eight priorities that the government regards as likely to contribute to socio-economic development.
Therefore, support for HRD from Japan can significantly assist the country's development. gI am confident that the contract we have signed is in line with the reality of the situation and the country's strategic vision for education,h said Lytou.
Toshimishi Aoki said that JDS began sending Lao students to study in Japan, in 1999. During the six years, around 120 fellows have already returned to Laos after finishing their study in undergraduate or postgraduate schools.
gI sincerely hope that all of them will effectively use the knowledge and experience gained in Japan to make a significant contribution to the development of this country,h said Aoki.
The scholarships aim to provide Lao students with academic research opportunities at Japanese universities.
About 54 students have already successfully completed their studies in Japan this month and returned to Laos , and another 21 fellows will return to Laos between July and September 2005.
With the intelligence and education they have gained from their Japanese experience, the graduates will play significant roles in the country's development, stated a press release.
