April feast of Asian youth football
Sisay Vilaysack
IN April Lao football fans will be able to watch many of the stars of the future in a feast of international youth matches.
Between April 8 and 14 the Laos Football Federation will host Group F of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U-13 tournament at the National Stadium.
Then between April 22 and 30 (final dates TBA), the LFF will host the 11-nation ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) U-13 Championships first round as co-hosts with Cambodia. The semi-finals and final will also be played in Laos, dates TBA.
LFF General Secretary Phouvanh Vongsouthi yesterday said, "The dates have been fixed for the AFC tournament, but we are still waiting to hear from the AFF about the exact dates for the AFF round. We have already sent a proposed schedule to the ASEAN Football Federation for April."
"We will jointly host this tournament with Cambodia, but it will be great for Lao football fans because the semi-finals and final will be played in our country," he said.
The AFC U-13s tournament will match 42 countries in eight groups.
Group A: Qatar (host), Palestine, Syria, United Arab Emirate, Yemen and Oman.
Group B: Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Bahrain (also to be played in Qatar).
Group C: Bangladesh (host), Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal.
Group D: Uzbekistan (host), Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Iran, India.
Group E: Cambodia (host), Malaysia, Indonesia, Maldives and the Philippines.
Group F: Laos (host), Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Myanmar.
Group G: China (host, in Qingdao), Korean Republic, Guam, Macau, Japan.
Group H: (China to host in Wuhan), Hong Kong, Mongolia, Chinese Taipei, Korea DPR.
The AFC tournament is labelled the Festival of Football 2005, and is mainly to give young players international experience. Organisers say the emphasis is on technical and tactical development rather than on winning.
The AFC also hoes the event will encourage future AFC competitions and that each AFC nation will be able to host a big tournament of Asian football.
Alongside the tournament, AFC is also running C-Licence coaching and refereeing courses to encourage quality coaching and refereeing for young players. This licence is step one on the way to B, A and professional coaching qualifications.
