people will choose sth which is the best for themself but it doesn't mean that they won't love their nation sometimes if you come to work in your country and finish university with the high degree so if you come back and work in lao, the salary must be higher right! money in foriegn country maybe higher but then everything also expensive, life is compliciated so depends on where you live and think that you like for me i think home is the best and you can't find this place in anypart of the world. trust me

The main reason is that Laos job market sucks and the economy is bad. Since money is the motivating factor in people, the government needs to pay better to retain good resources. Otherwise, educated people will seek job opportunities somewhere else. Hopefully, Laos will make dramatic changes and Laos will be more desirable for people to work in the future.

[glow=green,2,300] I think the main reasons that they don't come back home cos money and living condition in developing countries r better. Like Belle said ///"The main reason is that Laos job market sucks and the economy is bad"/// yeah that's true but in contrast economy in Laos is bad so we need those educated ppl come back home to help the gov and nation. We need those ppl to make a new better change. Anyway, it's depend on what thier attitude. for me if i were there after i graduated i would work to get money in developing country first, then come back home to help Laos, i know home country is the best coz i'm sure i can find a simple life, love, warm and care in my home country. Please don't be so pessimist. It doesn't matter where the Laotians will be, living abroad or go back to Laos after completing their study. Since they are Laotians, having Lao blood, they still have connections with their homeland, and then they can do a lot of things to help the development of their country when they are outside. As they can get better job, better income, they can provide support to the country. Please think about that if you are hungry, having bad living conditions, can you help others? Of course, NO! Now, If they have good job abroad, they can have good experiences learning from the job they do, and as well they can do the TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER to Laotians (inside Laos) by the Laotians (from abroad) which is cost much cheaper rather than technology transfer by the foreigners and communicating in different languages which is much expensive and complicated. In this case, the Laotians inside the country can learn new technology from Laotians outside the country in Lao language and in cheap cost for the development of Lao human resources and Lao technology as well. If you can have such kind of activities for the development of the country, don't you think it is one of the CHEAPEST and EFFICIENT ways to do benefit to Laos? Moreover, you can help the Lao government to save the national budget too. Look to your neighbors, the Chinese, The Vietnamese, etc. they are almost everywhere in the world, since many of them are living and working outside their country, they are still actively support their country in term of technology, education and economic development plus their hard-working nature, that's why they are strong and fast developing, especially you can see a good example of our neighbors the Vietnamese. Please consider about this with wisdom and longer vision. I hope this would help to understand in more positive way.

What is the exact meaning of scholarship provide by other countries to Laos? They all want you to go back to develop your motherland, isn't it? Ofcourse you can say that when you work abroad you can send money back to your relatives in Laos, and that's you can help your country, but it is a family level. Think about it, if you go back Laos and work in the related fields of what you had learned in abroad, how many thousand of Lao people can learn something from you? How many case of Lao people who got a job abroad and come back Laos? As human lush never change, the more money you get, the more you don't want to go back home. And if all Lao students who got the scholarship think like that, our country will be in a stage of lacking quality people and our country is going to be brain lost!. My suggestion is that after your graduation, you have to come back and work in Laos at least 1 or 2 years to transfer what you have learned to other lao people who has no chance to study abroad like you. Then after you work in Laos for 1 or 2 year, you can apply to work abroad depend on your desire. Becuase you already compensated the scholarship that you consumed to support your country. Ofcourse that working in Laos is a money talk, but experience is worth more than money. In addition, there are a lot of good opportunity for you to change your knowledge into money, if only you dare to try and never give up. Just my idea, you can agree or disagree of what i have said above.

If all lao people still think about individual wealth and fight about the same things as I read, then the picture of Lao will be loom, only when lao people realize what is the important thing need to be done to help Lao, then it still be likes that,...But I known one person, he graduated at Australian National University in Canberra in Stock exchange (MASTER Degree) while he still studied in Canberra he helped a lot of Lao students who studied in Canberra Universities, after that he returned to Lao to serve Lao...dispited National University of Canberra offered him a job to teach in University there...think more about likes Max said...money is good but helping your country to catch up with other, worth more....but there still people who just think this suck that f**k then we are behind, stop and think...why other people have to much love for their motherland and some just nothing...think.

This's exactly my case as I graduated in overseas and have yet returned home ever since.
I'm just like other Laotain, I love my motherland and I want to contribute to the development of my country. However, besides the love for the country, I also have the love for myself and my family which is much at the similar level.
Put yourself in my shoe and think about this. Upon graduation from any overseas university, do u really think u have sufficient ability to contribute to the country "effectively"?
To me, studying and working are two different matters that have some relation to one another. As a fresh graduate, with zero work experience from where you educated from, how many "practical" lessons can you learn from this "developed" country that you will bring back to your beloved motherland in the hope of helping it to develop? Don't just think that after graduation you are done with the learning and you r ready to do a great job back home. Learning from working is much more precious and practical. And it makes more sense for you to learn from the "developed" country and bring back those lessons you have learned to your country than to go back and work there straight away, isn't that so?
On my own, I was not from a wealthy family. My parents still have to work 7 days a week to sustain a stable income for the whole family. I hope to see them work lesser and have better life styles. And if I had have chosen to return home after graduation and been working in Laos now, my dream would be almost impossible as I would be earning very low there.
Even though I'm now working in overseas, I do not just keep what I earn to myself. I do also support my family and try to keep some saving for my future use when I return home to start with the low level of income or for some investment. I know for now the remittance money sent to my family seems like a small contribution to the country as a whole compared to what it would have benefited if I worked there, but this is what I can do while I'm learning and preparing myself to serve the country.
Different people have differnt reasons for living in overseas upon their graduation and I'm more than centain that they all love their motherland and will sooner or later go back to Laos to do their part in developing the country.
The bottom line is that there're always ways for anyone to contribute to the country disregard of where they are in the world.
And for me, I think I've made the correct decision.

It's me again...with more to say on this subject.
All of us probably feel at one point in time some obligations to our motherland Laos but we have other priorities because that’s reality. This does not mean that we are not patriotic. If we have the time and money, most of us would give back to Laos in a heart beat. However, if you are struggling to make a living and put food on the table, the last thing on your mind is to help other people or in this case our country. Money is what makes the world go round sadly and you are competing against other people to make a good living.
If our corrupt politicians can understand that higher salaries mean retaining good resources then they need to put some investments in its own people. We have so many foreigners in Laos getting richer every year and making so much money from Laos. The government needs to put in business laws where new businesses must hire 25% or whatever of Laotians to work in these companies and pay them fairly. Otherwise, foreign businesses will not be allowed in Laos. I’m sure there are other ways but we just need be smarter.
Besides the government, educated people who live and graduated from Laos Universities need to market themselves better. Venture out to these foreign businesses in Laos and ask for an interview. Try to take their jobs and ask for higher wages. Laos people need to move away from being shy and passive. I learned a long time ago that only the most aggressive people get better jobs and pays. So be a risk taker and show these companies what you are worth. If you are confident and have a great attitude, you will get your foot in the door. Trust me, you’ll make an impression some how.

The problem some students don't want to come back after completing their study is not uncommon in even good economy contries. I have seen many Thai, Korean, the Philipino, and so on students staying in US, EUROPE, and AUSTRALIA after finishing their degree. I agree with many Laoupdate friends that momey (opportunity to earn more money) is a key factor for students deciding to stay in foreign countries, though some students have other reasons. However, deep down inside, I believe, these Lao students also love our country and will come back one day to make a contribution to the development in Laos. Do we lost our human resources? yes of course we do, but the country can get benefit back in some ways (what way? too long to talk about here) and in particular if the government has a better policy to deal with this issue. I am a Lao student studying in overseas. I just can't wait to finish my study and go back to my lovely country. I am sure some of you who stay on in overseas get jealous now. He he he, you can come back anytime!
