Support pours in for Laos to host SEA Games in 2009
CHINA, Japan and Vietnam have pledged financial support to Laos, which is slated to host the SEA Games four years down the road.
According to Mr Somphou Phongsa, Deputy Secretary of the Lao International Olympic Committee, the organiser will need at least US$100 million to prepare for this event. Therefore, the financial aid from donor countries came in handy, as Laos prepares for the construction of a stadium, road works and renovation of major hotels.
Mr Somphou added that it hopes Thailand could act as Advisor to the event, because the two countries would not experience language barrier or glaring culture differences by virtue of their physical proximity.
Lastly, Mr Somphou said that the SEA Games is an important event for Lao PDR because it is a platform for people all over the world, particularly in this region, to know about the country.
