HA NOI EViet Nam claimed overall victory at the Ha Noi International Petanque Tournament which finished at the Ha Noi’s Quan Ngua Sports Palace on Tuesday.
Their win included gold medals from Phuong Em, Thuy Diem and Thu Hang playing for Viet Nam 1, who defeated Hong Nhung, Hong Le and Hoa Son (Viet Nam 2) in the women’s trios.
Em and Le grabbed Viet Nam’s first gold in the women’s doubles by beating Thailand 13-6 in the final.
While Viet Nam won the women’s event, the men’s title went to Laos, who pocketed the last golds of the event.
"Vietnamese players have reached only 70 per cent of their ability and their tactical awareness is improving all the time. However, I believe that from now until the 23rd Southeast Asian Games, with training plans adjusted and a competition in Thailand, my players will be at their peak and stand a good chance of bringing home gold medals," said national coach Somsak Juychun Prasart.
The Viet Nam team came first with two golds, one silver and two bronzes. Laos were second with one less bronze than Viet Nam. Thailand placed third with only one silver despite sending their best players to the event.
Malaysia, Japan and Singapore all went home empty-handed. EVNS
