During a recent visit to Beng village in Lama district in Sekong province, local authorities found many cases of unexploded ordnance. One villager, Mr Sop, lost both his legs to the bombs. Local authorities said that there are many more similar cases like this. Laos is the most heavily bombed country. Data from the Lao National Unexploded Ordnance Programme revealed that over 500,000 bombs were dropped during the war. These bombs can be found in rice fields, rivers, schools and on the roads. In order for the country to progress, there is an urgent need to step up effort to remove the unexploded ordnance.
