Media of Medias and Lao partner launch folk music channel
(Thai Press Reports via NewsEdge): Thai entertainment firm Media of Medias (MOM) has teamed up with a Laotian partner to launch an MTV-style satellite music television channel as part of its business expansion abroad.
Dubbed T Channel, or the Traditional Channel, it will broadcast Asean folk music 24 hours a day, with a potential audience covering 22 countries around the world. The total investment was over 30 million baht ($782,200).
The channel was officially introduced earlier last month, in a joint venture with MVtv Co of Laos, which holds a ten-year satellite broadcasting contract awarded by Vientiane.
Details of concession costs were not given, but Kosit Suvinijjit, chairman of Media of Medias, said the two parties would operate under a revenue-sharing agreement.
In the new venture, MOM will oversee marketing operations and production. The programmes are to be produced in Bangkok before beaming the signal to Vientiane, the headquarters of MVtv Co, where it will be uplinked worldwide via Thaicom-3.
In the early stage, programs are to be produced in Thai with local VJs. Later this year folk music programmes from neighbouring countries such as Cambodia, Malaysia, Laos, and Brunei will be added.
VJs from Asean nations will be invited to work in Bangkok, with each programme produced in their own language.
"The West has MTV, and Thailand will have T Channel. It will be beneficial as a cultural connection," Kosit said.
Kosit said the firm expected the channel to earn more than 100 million baht ($1.6 million) in advertising sales.
