Green light for 10,000 Lao workers for Thailand's construction industry
BANGKOK, Sept 15 (TNA) - Labour Minister Somsak Thepsuthin has authorised the construction industry to import 10,000 manual workers from Laos, effective from October 18.
The decision emerged from a meeting here on Wednesday between Mr. Somsak and representatives of the Thai construction industry and followed the signing of agreements between Thailand, Laos and Cambodia to legally important additional manpower to help fill the Thai economy's need. Poomsan Rojlertjanya, Chairman of the Thai Construction Industry Association said there is an acute labour shortage in the industry, as Thais now shun the so-called 'dirty work' that pays little but demands hard labour. Some 50 construction companies that are the Association members need nearly 11,000 workers to complete their projects on schedule.
With the labour minister's approval, a delegation from the association will visit Laos late this month to negotiate terms of employment with the Lao authorities for the first group of 10,000 imported Lao workers.
Mr. Somsak said the permission to hire the 10,000 Lao workers is a temporary measure and he had instructed the association to compile statistical proof of actual labour demand.
The minister said Thai companies have so far sought permission to officially employ the 1.7 million foreign workers now in the country, but only 700,000 have registered. (TNA)--E007
