New Year outside Vientiane

VIENTIANE is not planning any special religious rites during the New Year, but Khammuan province in central Laos is to celebrate in style with its largest-ever programme of events.
gThis yearfs New Year celebration will be bigger than ever before,h said Tourism Office chief Singthong.
gOn Wednesday morning we will tie an auspicious cotton string on the Pha Nom stupa in Thailandfs Nakhon Phanom province which will reach across the Mekong river to reach the Sikhottabong stupa in Laos,h he said.
gIt will have to be about 55km long,h said Thaiyaphone. gThere will be 18 monks from Thailand and Laos, and a ceremony will be held on a ferry in the middle of the river.h
On April 14, there will be a procession for Nang Sangkhan, the Miss Thakek New Year beauty pageant.
The province is allowing people to pour water over the Buddha statues in Tham Pha cave, Na Khangxang, Thakek district during New Year.
gThe upcoming Pi Mai Lao is expected to attract many people to the town because it is a special year for Thakek,h he said. gIt is the first time the province has promoted tourism.h
In Vientiane there will only be sports competitions on the Don Chan beach in mid-Mekong, while Vientiane people will be able to take a dip to cool down or build sandcastles on the beach on April 14.
The World Heritage-listed town of Luang Prabang will celebrate in its own way, with a morning offering to monks and baci ceremonies to wish happiness and prosperity. The highlights will be two parades, Nang Sangkhan and the solemn procession of the sacred statue of Pha Bang.
