May 17, 2005 Paris, France -- Alcatel has won three contracts worth $9.3 million with Lao Telecommunications (LTC), a telecommunications service provider in the Lao People's Democratic Republic, to provide optical, wireless, and broadband services platforms in a phased network expansion. The contracts were won through Alcatel Shanghai Bell, Alcatel's flagship Chinese company. The company says the deployment will make advanced communications services accessible to a greater number of Laotians, and will further strengthen the company's position as LTC's primary telecommunications platforms provider.
According to a press release, the company will implement its Optical Multi-Service Node (OMSN) systems in order to expand the provider's optical backbone and metro networks. The company will also deploy its 1642 Edge Multiplexer Compact to allow the provider to enhance connections between its optical backbone network and last-mile metro access points, thus enabling local enterprises to benefit from enhanced service delivery and accessibility, according to the company. The company says it will also upgrade the provider's existing network management system to ensure reliable and efficient monitoring of the new equipment.
The provider will also use the company's 7325 Advanced Services Access Manager remote unit to deliver broadband access services to local government offices and enterprises in the country's capital and provinces. As a result, according to the release, LTC will become the largest operator in the country to offer high-speed Internet access, advanced Web-based applications, and file downloads.
The wireless component of the deployment will involve the company's Evolium GSM/GPRS radio and core products, including base stations, base station controllers, and network sub-systems, which the company says will expand the provider's network capacity to approximately 360,000 users, while bringing affordable wireless service to users located in remote parts of the country. The wireless project is expected to be completed in October 2005, and will increase the company's share of the GSM market in Laos to 60%, according to the company.
"Alcatel has been our long-term strategic partner since 1994, and has demonstrated over these years to be a reliable partner with industry-proven solutions, strong expertise, and local presence that helps us better serve our customers," remarks Atip Rittaporn, an LTC board member.
"The trust and confidence LTC has in Alcatel demonstrates that our strategy to help operators deliver user-centric broadband services is paying off," adds Christian Reinaudo, president of Alcatel's Asia Pacific activities. "We will continue supporting LTC in meeting the changing and growing market demand, and will play a key role in developing advanced service offerings."
