Hello everyone!
This is my first post here. I was wondering why there isn't a discussion about computer software on this site. As I am an IT specialist, I'd like to share my knowledge with you and lay a hand to the ones who need it. Of course, there are other people that could help. So this is what I want to do: let's talk about our software needs.
We all want to be able to do our job or personal needs faster and easier but sometimes we don't know how or what to use in order to get the best result. Sure, "best" seems subjective, because we all have our ways in doing things. I'm not talking about those special ways. I'm talking about real things and real problems.
I'm talking about basic needs.
Who would say no to operating system security and privacy protection on the internet ?
I think not too many. We need a basic set of programs that allows us to use our computers in a safe way. What are the things we need ?
First: operating system updates
Second: a program to browse the internet in a safe way (safety is relative so we have to choose what's best for at a certain time)
Third: A good antivirus program
Fourth: A good firewall
What do I use ?
Well... it's more than Windows. I'm also using Linux, but the rules apply to Linux too. Anyway, most of the people are using Windows so I'll continue with Windows software recommendations. But if anyone wants to start a Linux discussion, I'd be glad to get into it. So here I go:
1. Windows Updates are my top priority
2. For safe browsing I'm using Mozilla Firefox with the Adblock extension (I'm also using other extensions to make my work faster and more comfortable regarding my needs)
3. NOD32 Antivirus is currently the best choice in antivirus software. My system is clean/virus-free
4. The firewall part is one I can't be too specific. There are 3 firewall products that worth trying: ZoneAlarm, Kerio and Outpost. Right now I'm using Outpost Firewall. I can't say I'm happy with it, but it keeps bad things out - which is what I really need. There are a few things I don't like about this firewall but I can live with it as long as I'm safe. ZoneAlarm and Kerio also have "things I don't like" so that's it! I'll stick with Outpost until something good happens with one of the other ones - not that they are worse products. They are very comparable from the security point of view. Just choose what suits you most.
OK, I'll wait for your opinion about the thread I just started and I'll be happy to assist you with any other software needs if I can help.
Have a nice day!
