Youth problem clinic promotion
Souknilundon Southivongnorath
THE Vientiane Youth Centre is hoping that its television advertising this week will encourage more youngsters to attend its clinic to discuss problems.
gWe would like to have more youngsters know that this is a place where they can discuss problems in health and relationships. We know that teenagers have problems but many do not know where to ask about what to do,h said centre staff member Thavisack Thammavongsa.
The centrefs clinic, which has been running for five years, previously ran a radio campaign, resulting in 150 youngsters a month attending for advice about problems, and they hope that the TV campaign will result in much greater public awareness of their existence and availability.
gI am very proud that I can help teenagers find out the best way to solve problems. I myself have visited the clinic when I had problems,h said spot presenter and Over Dance singer Ms Manila Souvanduan (Kai).
gThis is the only place in Laos which specialises in understanding teenagers, trying to help them,h said Thavisack.
gSome teenagers already come to discuss their problems, but some are not brave enough. But they should feel confident that our staff will keep their problem strictly secret. If you are too timid to come, you can also telephone 252887,h he added.
gOver the last five years, we have been able to help a lot of teenagers with problems such as STDs (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) and drugs. When they come here, we do ask their names and where they live. Instead, we give them a number, to ensure anonymity and help them feel confident enough to tell us their problems,h said Thavisack.
gI was not brave enough to go there to discuss my STD,h said a youngster. gBut I heard the radio spot about the clinic so I decided to call them. They asked me to come so I went to the clinic. They were very friendly towards me; they answered and advised me on all my questions. Now I still use the clinic and appreciate its good and warm attitude.h
