During the course, students learned about the history of the Khaen, its importance to the Lao culture and tradition, as well as play a note or two using the Khaen. After this crash course, these students are expected to volunteer as trainers to teach their peers about Khaen. The opening ceremony of the club was attended by Deputy Minister of Information and Culture Khekkeo Soisaya, General Director of Vientiane Education Division Saithong Keodouangdy and Chairman of Cultural Promotion Foundation Vilachit Philaphandeth, officials concerned and Vientiane residents. In fact, various sectors in Vientiane have been organising competitions and courses like this to keep the Khaen alive. For example, the Cultural Promotion Foundation under the Ministry of Information and Culture organised Khaen competitions twice over the past two years. The first time was held in 2003 in conjunction with the 28th National Day, the 55th founding anniversary of the Lao People’s Army and the 83rd birthday of former President Kaisone Phomvihane. In 2004, the Khaen competition was held for the second time to celebrate National Day and to welcome other important events.
