Five Lao students to head to Japan on study tour
FIVE Lao students who came in top in a nationwide writing competition will be heading to Japan on a study tour soon.
The five are Ms Lamnguen Souknalarth from Parksun Upper Secondary School (Borikhamxay), Mr Atsavin Thepphakan from Thakhaek Upper Secondary School (Khammouan), Mr Khy Symeuang from Santhiphap Upper Secondary School (Luang Prabang), Ms Latdavanh Xaiyasaeng from Chantha Upper Secondary School (Attopue), and Ms Chanthakhone Khamfong from Moun Upper Secondary School (Champassack).
The five deserving students received their prizes, which comprised certificates of congratulation and study tours to Japan, at the Lao Plaza Hotel last Friday. The competition, held for the fourth time, was jointly organised by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Ministry of Education.
In addition to the top five winners, 10 students (including five female) who came in second received certificates and education fund, while another 27 (including 14 female) who came in third received certificates of congratulation.
More than 42 upper secondary school students in provinces all over Laos, including 22 females, took part in the competition.
The first round of selection started last October and ended in March this year, while the second round of selection took place in the month of April. According to the panel of judges, the selection criteria included the choice of topics, the flow of the story, clarity and the writing standard.
Guests at the award ceremony included Deputy Minister of Education Borsaengkham Vongdalar, Minister Counsellor, Charge df Affaires of Japanese Embassy to Laos, Dean of the National University of Laos Professor Somkot Mangnormek, JICA representatives, as well as teachers and students.
