Death penalty and life sentence for drug traffickers
IN one of the country's largest crackdowns on drug trafficking, five drug peddlers were given the death penalty, another four sentenced to jail and one was fined 700 million kip (USD 70,000) in addition to two years in jail.
The sentences were issued by Vientiane Capital Court on 19 May.
According to the Court spokesperson, the 10 drug traffickers smuggled a 385,887 amphetamine pills weighing a total of 3,677.3 grams. The pills were packed in 192 small bundles and then transported in nine big sacks. Some of the accused were also found to be using counterfeit passports and travel documents.
They were well aware that amphetamine is an intoxicant and any transaction involving the drug is against Article 135 of the Lao criminal law, added the Court spokesperson.
The five who were given the death sentences were: Mr Jai Yor, 50, a Burmese national arrested at Mone village, Tongphuang district, Bokeo province; Mrs Bouasone Maisamhong, 38, a merchant in Pholsavanh Nue village, Sisattanak district, Vientiane Capital; Mr Mai-Air Phomma, 38, a worker in Xieng Chai village, Tongphueng district, Bokeo province; Mr Tui Phanidchalueng, 23, a driver in Houai Saikeo village, Bokeo province and Mr Maiphanh, 27, a worker and resident of Mone village, Tongphuang district, Bokeo province. Three of them were charged for their involvement in transporting the drugs from Bokeo province in the north to Vientiane Capital in central Laos.
The four who were give life sentences were: Mr Thongchan Phanthasid, 44, a worker and resident of Pholkham village, Pholhol district, Vientiane province; Mr Hongla or Joy, 27, a worker and resident of Nanorkhum village, Thoulakhom district, Vientiane province; Mr Khonekeo, 24, a worker and resident of Phanghaeng village, Nasaithong district, Vientiane Capital and Mr Phan, 30, a driver from the same village as Mr Khonekeo. These four were charged for their direct involvement in smuggling the drug. They were each fined 700 million kip in addition to their jail sentences.
The last was Mr Aijai, a 22-year-old Burmese who was charged for possessing and processing counterfeit passports. He was fined 2 million kip and two years in jail.
