Laos celebrates World Environment Day Vientiane (VNA) - Laos held a meeting in Vientiane on June 8 to commemorate World Environment Day under the theme "Green Cities: Plan for the Planet". In his keynote address, Deputy Prime Minister Asang Laoly said that urbanisation in recent years has caused serious environmental pollution. "Unplanned urbanisation has had a series of negative impacts on the environment, natural resources and ecological systems," he told the participants. He also called for joint efforts by both the Lao government and people to protect the environment, stressing "Laos is blessed with rich natural resources but these resources are fast depleting due to careless use by people". "To show its commitment to preserve the environment for future generation, Laos had signed the UN Convention on Environment Protection and International Cooperation on Management for Environment," he added. On this occasion, Lao Prime Minister Bounhang Volachit urged the entire people to show their high sense of responsibility for environmental management and sustainable utilisation of natural resources. In an open letter, the PM also said "Social and environmental development projects in Laos have enjoyed strong support and cooperation from global and regional environmental organisations" ;D ;D Source: VNA Photo: www.cesvi.org/images/poster_laospic.jpg
