Following the success of the 26th General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Organisation Laos is set to host another important ASEAN meeting this week.
The 37th ASEAN Economic Ministers Meeting (AEM) will run from today until Friday and will see Economic Ministers from the 10 ASEAN countries meet to discuss their respective economic performance and the performance of the region as a whole over the last 12 months.
Last week the Minister of Commerce, Soulivong Dalavong, held a press conference to inform the media about Laosf readiness to host AEM 37 in the wake of AIPO 26.
He said that Vientiane was ready to host the event, which will be on a smaller scale than the last two meetings, AIPO 26 and the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting, which was held last month.
The Ministry of Commerce has been split into several committees in order to more efficiently prepare for the meeting. These committees are comprised of protocol, security and facilities, among others.
The Ministry has also been in contact with the Embassyfs of invited observer countries who will be participating in the meeting. There are six countries that have been granted observer status for this AEM, Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand and the Republic of Korea.
As each country will be bringing a delegation and media contingent, as well as other countries media contingents and the 20 news agencies that are expected to send reporters to cover the event, the total number of foreign guests at AEM could exceed 320.
Issues set to be discussed include furthering the relations and cooperation on economic activities of the ASEAN countries, the ASEAN free trade area, investment between ASEAN countries and enhancing cooperation on an economic level between ASEAN and the observer countries.
The delegates will also seek to evaluate the progress on the implementation of the various treaties and agreements that have been signed over the last few years to see if they are on track.
Another hot topic will be the formation of the ASEAN Community, which ASEAN countries are trying to bring to life by 2020.
Mr Soulivong stressed that the city of Vientiane is ready to host the meeting and that he is sure it will go off without a hitch, as important meetings are nothing new to Laos, since it has hosted so many over the last 12 months.
Despite the readiness, Mr Soulivong urged officials concerned to be sure to pay attention to their tasks and put in the required effort to make sure the meeting is a success.
