Laos seeks to buy new generation Russian armaments MOSCOW, October 4 (Itar-Tass) - Laos intends to buy new Russian armaments and component parts for Soviet-made military hardware, Laotian Ambassador to Russia Thongsavanh Phomvihane told Itar-Tass on Tuesday. The purchase of new armaments and component parts will be discussed at a session of the bilateral commission for trade, economic and scientific cooperation, due in Moscow on Thursday. The foreign minister of Laos, Somsavat Lengsavat, will represent the Laotian side. According to the ambassador, the Laotian army is using military hardware and armaments bought in the Soviet Union times, including firearms, helicopters, planes and tanks. Part of it is already outdated, while another part is in need of repair, the ambassador said. He said Laos wants to discuss a possible production of component parts in Laos on Russian licenses, but everything depends of whether it will be economically expedient, At a session on Thursday the sides will consider ways to boost trade and economic cooperation, the ambassador added. Trade between Russia and Laos has grown threefold over the past year, amounting to two billion dollars, the top Laotian diplomat said.
