Mega Concert raises millions for tsunami fund

THE Mega Concert to aid tsunami victims, organised by the Lao Journalists Association (LJA) on January 15, was poorly attended in numbers but still raised millions of kip from businesses and the public, and from a telephone hotline for donations.
"Hundreds called up to support the victims because the concert was broadcast live throughout the country," said LJA Vice President Somsanouk Mixay.
Over 100 local artists took to the ITECC stage to perform modern and traditional songs and dances to an audience of over 1,000.
"The Lao Government joins others in expressing condolences to the bereaved and has set up a taskforce committee to mobilise sympathy and support. Today the LJA, enjoying most commendablesupport and cooperation from many, is hosting this 'concert of sympathy,' the proceeds of which are destined to help the tsunami victims in a small way. This is the single purpose of this grand concert tonight," said LJA President Bouabane Vorakhoun.
Pop stars such as Ting Phailavanh and Touey Chanphaxay (Valentine Music) and Overdance and Alouna (Indee Records) joined Alexandra and Noy Sengsouliya to perform. Valentine Music and Indee Records also thrilled the audience with a specially written song for the tsunami victims.
"I asked Ty Oudalay, who wrote Kor Thod (Sorry), to write a song called Khun Phalang Chai (encouragement for tsunami victims). It took three days to write and rehearse the song," said Valentine Music President Phoutthachanh Paphassalang (Bee).
The concert included a performance from the National Circus as well as traditional song and dance by the National School of Fine Arts.
The cool weather kept away many people who had bought tickets, who stayed at home and watched the live TV broadcast and donated over the telephone during the four hours of the concert.
The audience included many families. "I also donated for the tsunami victims through my village. Today the weather was so cold, but still I brought my children to see their favourite pop stars, like Ting Phailavan and Mr Hin Som of Over Dance. Never mind the cold; this way I get more merit," said Ban Simeuang villager Mrs Bounmy.
The MC announced that someone had called from Sekong province and said he wanted to donate 20,000 kip, and that even though he had not much money, he wanted to support the victims as much as he could.
Concert organisers said that they were proud to be able to encourage people to sympathise with the victims.
