Miss Philippines crowned 1st ASEAN beauty queen (Kyodo) _ Miss Philippines Jhezarie Javier has been crowned the first Miss ASEAN, beating out rivals from seven other member countries in the regional grouping. Miss Indonesia Imelda Fransisca was the runner-up in the Saturday night final. Cambodia and Laos did not send representatives. During the pageant, broadcast throughout six of the 10 ASEAN member countries, the finalists paraded in their traditional cultural costumes but there was no swimsuit round. The organizers said swimsuits were unnecessary because the elected Miss ASEAN will promote tourism, trade and investment. Judges in the contest, organized by the ASEAN chambers of commerce and industry, placed a 40 percent weight on intelligence, followed by beauty and behavior at 30 percent each. Javier, 23, will serve as the ASEAN goodwill ambassador to promote ASEAN tourism, trade and investment. ASEAN groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Source: Kyodo

Keep in mind that the Philippines were ruled by Spain way back when and many Filipinos are descendants of the Spanish people, hence their names. Even the country was named after the Spanish king "Philip."
Just a history lesson to those interested :-)

Just a history lesson to those interested :-) Yeah, i know that, but dont you think they should at least change their name... what identity do they have??? Image Laos being called Lousania or Lousville after the french king Lous VIII... They should change their name to what they would call before the Spanish conquered it, if they have any pride for the heritage and culture... but i guess they like being colonized and their culture being dictated by other nations...

I disagree with you view point. If your great grand parents are Spanish and you are descendants of that bloodline then you are Spanish regardless and that is your identity. Filipinos who are Spanish descendant have Spanish names and Filipinos who are NOT mixed with Spanish have Filipinos names. So why would you change yourself? That does not make sense to me. Everyone should be proud of where they came from and their roots. This is the same for Laos people in America. They have America names and some are mixed with Caucasian. So are you telling me that they don’t have any identity because they have America names? All names have history behind them so don’t assume people change their names because of dictation from other countries. That is very unlikely…
